San Diego is just 20 miles north of Mexico, situated in the rolling hills and mesas that rise from the Pacific shore to join with the Laguna Mountains to the east. Its bay is one of the country’s finest natural harbors. The city covers a large area of vastly different terrain: miles of ocean and bay shoreline, densely forested hills, fertile valleys, and mountains, canyons, and desert. San Diego is one of very few natural harbours on the west coast of America. It has a very distinctive shape best described as an upside-down  U. In the centre is Coronado peninsula which has a very unusual shape. Protecting San Diego from the Pacific Ocean is Point Loma. The 3D chart brings life , shape and relevance to the information presented on the nautical chart. This  3D chart was created using NOAA chart 18773. The channel is quite deep as it winds its way around to the Commercial port. The points of interest in the  3D chart are Point Loma, Ballast point, Shelter Island, Americas Cup Harbour and Harbour Island. The North Channel sweeps around to the City of San Diego where you can see the Cruise ship terminal and navy pier. The bridge that connects the city to Coronado looks very impressive in 3d – I can assure you that it is very difficult to cut especially as it sweeps north as you approach the end. On the Peninsula you have Glorietta Bay and the beautiful Silver Strand . This piece is framed in a limed white  with a cotton white surround mount oman aqua blue background all carefully chosen to compliment the chart . Other frame options can include Oak , Obeche and a large white frame. In this case the frame size is 930*750mm. There is also the option of surround …

A recent commission was for Stones in Salcombe. Along with the boat yard they also import specialised woods for the marine industry, in particular the prestigious classic & super yachts across  North America and Europe. Tristan Stone & I combined forces to create a 3D chart table© of Salcombe , the 3D chart was an archive chart of Salcombe and its various inlets. Tristan used Wenge wood for the table which complimented the 3D chart and was set off by the surround lighting. Wenge is a member of the great tree producing family, Leguminosae and comes from Africa, it has a gorgeous deep almost black colour, I can only describe it as stunning. The chart within the table is of Salcombe Harbour. I used a B&W chart from the 1950′s. A beautiful area and equally a beautiful chart. At the entrance to the harbour you have Bolt Head to the west and Prawle to the east. the outer entrance is called the Range. The entrance to the Salcombe estuary has a sand bar which is virtually impassable at low water  except for a a very narrow section to the west, I would say impossible in bad weather. The estuary is made up of several creeks that add to the character of the area. The South Sands and North sands bay s are nestled between Moult Pt . The leading lights at Sandhill Pt  guide mariners in over the bar into the main channel that leads up past Salcombe Town. The Batson Creek & Southpool creek  lead off from the main channel at  Snapes & Scoble  Points. The next section has unusual names for features like “The Bag” , “Mable Shoal” & “Dentridge” . Now the harbour broadens out into what can be best described as a basin where you have several creeks leading …

The Firth of Forth was created using chart 736 from the UKHO. This was a challenge at every level! The picture shows the bridges that traverse the Firth of Forth in Scotland, this is probably the most difficult 3D work . Framed in a large white frame with surround lighting built in the end result was simply stunning. It was commissioned as a corporate gift by a company based in the south of England for a customer living overlooking the Firth of Forth, we delivered it directly unseen by the client  - that is what you call trust! From an overall perspective the Firth of Forth is an important waterway with many important industries from shipbuilding to naval yards and close by you have the beautiful city of Edinburg.  Port Edgar which is tucked in under the famous bridges which span the Firth of Forth  at the narrow point Queensferry. The Railway bridge is built on a small island Inch Garvie. Inverkeithing Bay & Dalgety  are on the north shore. There is a very interesting channel between Barefoot Point  and Inchcolm Island & Meadulse rocks, on the western end you have a small rock called the Haystack. The channel is very deep  as much as 30m which explains why there is a terminal at Barfoot. On the eastern side there is a small island called Car Craig. Its obvious looking at the chart that the Meadulse rocks are treacherous and the associated shoals extend quite a distance to the NE. On the north side you have the Common rocks directly east of Hawkcarig Point. On the south side you have the Oscars Rocks , the Cow & Calves,  Inch Mickery  and Cramond island . I used a large white frame with a cotton white surround, the background is a marine …

Latitude Kinsale was commissioned to make a unique award which was presented by the Volvo Ocean Race organisation to the City of Abu Dhabi who were a host port in the 2011-12 event. I created a story board that depicted the start and finish ports. The attached  pictures show this in great detail. On the lefthand side of the frame is Capetown and on the right is Abu Dhabi. Both are complex charts with their own intricate details that bring the nautical charts to life and tell a unique story.

Dubai

Being commissioned to make a 3D chart of Dubai is both interesting and challenging especially with the palm artificial archipelagos. Re creating these in 3D on the chart is quite difficult but the end result speaks for itself. In this particular chart  there are 3 palms : Palm Jebel Ali, Palm Jumeirah and Palm Deira. Also shown is the World project . The sea is quite shallow and there are several banks. NE of Dubai you will see the island of Abu Musa. Overall a very interesting chart. Located on the Persian Gulf, between Sharjah and Abu Dhabi, Dubai is one of the seven emirates that comprise the United Arab Emirates (UAE). Geography of Dubai is as interesting as the emirate itself is.Dubai is located in the Persian Gulf coast of UAE . Also shown are the numerous oil wells off shore. This piece is framed in a limed white  with a cotton white surround mount oman aqua blue background all carefully chosen to compliment the chart . Other frame options can include Oak , Obeche and a large white frame. In this case the frame size is 600*500mm. There is also the option of surround lighting which was developed by me and can be implemented on any 3D chart.

Assomption island is situated approximately 37km south of the eastern tip of Aldabra (see gallery ). This raised coral island has a mostly gently shelving rocky coastline, with the exception of the western coast that has an almost uninterrupted sandy beach that extends for approximately five kilometres. There is a large shelf extending out to sea on the eastern side of the island and a very steep drop close to shore on the western side. The 3D chart shows this in great detail. I used a large white frame with a cotton white surround, the background is a aqua blue. The overall size is 500X 500mm with Surround lighting built into the frame I was invited to exhibit my work on board the the Ship “The World”, I wanted to show how flexible and creative  my work is. I looked at the itinerary of the ship and saw that they were anchoring & exploring the Atol, so what better way to introduce the island and its features ! and more importantly what better way to capture the memories of being in Paradise! See Aldabra Seychelles gallery Aldabra

The Seychelles are fascinating  and in 3D are simply awesome. The Aldabra group of islands lie in the outer islands of the Seychelles, in the most remote part of the chain. Here in the Aldabra Group you will find the largest raised coral atoll. It’s 34 km long, running east to west, and it has been named a World Heritage Site by Unesco. There are four main islands in the atoll, surrouding a tidal lagoon. The four islands are Ile Malbar, Ile Picard , Grande Terre and Polymnie. What I love about this 3D chart is that is shows how unique the Atol is in shape , the shallow lagoon in the centre and yet the depths within a short distance from the shore go to 3000 meters into the Indian Ocean. The frame has inbuilt Surround lighting which shows up the features of the Atol so well. I used a large white frame with a cotton white surround, the background is a a dark brown which I used to create a contrast between the white surround & Sea  which in turn elevates the island. The overall size is 900X 800mm with Surround lighting built into the frame I was invited to exhibit my work on board the the Ship “The World”, I wanted to show how flexible and creative  my work is. I looked at the itinerary of the ship and saw that they were anchoring & exploring the Atol, so what better way to introduce the island and its features ! and more importantly what better way to capture the memories of being in Paradise!

This 3D chart was commissioned for a house in Puerto de Pollensa in the NE coast of Majorca. The key features of the area are the two bays , Bahia de Pollensa & Bahia de Alcudia. Both are popular resorts with sheltered harbours. To the east is the Canal de Menorca which separates the two islands. There are three important headlands with significant lighthouses, Cabo de Formentor , Cabo del Pinar and Cabo de Pera. The 3D chart brings life , shape and relevance to the information presented on the nautical chart. It shows how the water depths shoal as you approach each of the bays from the east but to the north you get the rapid deepening into the Mediterranean. the headland features show up very well and so to does the channel between the islands. This chart was made by hand using an Admiralty chart sources from the UKHO. It is also possible to get a B&W version. The frame in this case is Limed white with a cotton white surround mount on an aqua  blue background, the combination of frame colours and mounts has been carefully chosen to compliment the 3D chart . In this case the end result is a fresh nautical feel that will compliment any environment and will always stand out and be appreciated for years to come. Other frame options can include Oak , Obeche and a large white frame. In this case the frame size is 600*500mm. There is also the option of surround lighting which was developed by me and can be implemented on any 3D chart.

Elba

The Relief Chart: This pieces was created for a client who’s favourite holiday location is the Island of Elba off the Italian coast. The Tuscan Archipelago, or Tuscan Islands, consist of a group of seven islands: Elba, Giglio, Capraia, Pianosa, Montecristo, Gorgona and Giannutri. The main feature is Elba lying just off the Italian coastline separated by the Canaldi Poimbino. The main land features include the Pta Ala which has a large fort, the Golfo di Follonica with Portyecchio nestled in the NW corner of the Bay and sheltered by Elba. To the SW of Elba is Isola Pianosa which was once a prison  but is now uninhabited. To the NW is the island of Capraia, it lies between Gorgona in the north and Elba in the south. It has an area of 19 square kilometres, making it the third largest of the Tuscan Islands, after Elba and Giglio. Framing & Size: Framed in Oak with a cream surround mount on a aqua blue background. The frame can be obiche, limed white, oak. The estimated frame size is 600*700MM. Other options include Surround lighting or we can source the old B&W chart General Location : Only 10 km away from the Italian mainland, with a surface area of 224 km2, Elba is the largest of the islands in the Tuscan Archipelago, and the third largest of the Italian islands. Its particularly mild climate, the variety of its 147 km of coastline and the majestic beauty of the Monte Capanne mountains (1,019 m altitude) have made it an internationally renowned tourist centre. Also famous because Napoleon Bonaparte was exiled by the Allied governments to Elba following his abdication at Fontainebleau and landed on the island on 4 May 1814.

The pictures show a piece from an old “Western Mediterranean” chart from the Admiralty. It was a small commission for the cabin of a yacht based in the med. It shows the island of Corsica, the Ligurian sea , the Gulf of Genoa, Elba,  Genoa, the italian coast as it sweeps up to Genoa. The chart was framed in a black frame with a charcoal surround mount on a black background, approximate frame dimension 500*500mm
