3D CHARTS

There is something special about the sea and nautical charts. We all have our favourite spot on the coast and at some stage we probably bought a nautical chart & framed it to capture and hold  onto the memory, magic and power of the sea as it carves its intricate shapes on the coastline. That framed chart ,while special is probably hidden away in an office or an “out of the way” location because it is big and lacks that quality that makes it a piece of art. Well not anymore!

A 3D chart only uses a section of the overall chart, it focuses on your specific location of the chart.  They are made to order , you tell us about the focal point –an area of special significance such as a cruising ground , where you live or some life event, we will then research the best chart options and make suggestions based on our skills  and access to a vast nautical chart data base. The chart is made using several charts and it is all cut by hand- Yes, by hand!. The different layers of depth are cut and re assembled , trimmed and beautifully framed. The 3D effect enhances one of the key attributes of any chart -depth! The result is a truly unique piece of nautical art that unlike conventional art, you know what you are going to get except it is better than you expected! As for finding a location to hang it ? not an issue  it will take centre stage in any home and admired by all.

Latitude Kinsale prides itself in being innovative, like the addition of surround lighting built into the frame!! The effect is stunning! A soft  white light is cast evenly across the face of the chart highlighting the 3D, casting shadows and in a way that there is no reflection in the glass. In a room at night they glow and become a major feature. We developed a special frame with inbult LED lighting carefully concealed in the frame so all you see is the “light”!


 

Pricing depends on the size and complexity of the location.3D charts are made to commission, there are no limited editions, each piece is original and made to your requirements. The typical starting size including frame measures 480mm x 380mm and the price is €450+P&P. However most of the commissions are much larger, some have been as large as 1300mm x 950mm

To Commission a 3D chart, simply tell us :

  • Where?   As much info as possible about the location – use Google Earth and send it to us as a mail.
  • The focal point.
  • Why this area?  What is the significance – Home? ,  Sailing ground?
  • Who is the recipient and why? This helps to us to select the right size and detail.

Using an Admiralty Chart, the land and sea are layered to show contours and depth in 3D. Each chart is painstakingly hand cut and assembled to form a unique product. The 3D effect enhances the chart and physically illustrates a key attribute of any chart - depth! The end product is presented in a simple neat frame that enhances the 3 D effect

Latitude Kinsale is a family business specialising in unique custom made Nautical chart products. Using original nautical charts we will work with the customer to create a unique bespoke chart whether it is a light chart, a 3D chart or even a table.

The first step is to identify a focal point, that precious location that has memories or is where we live or sail. Latitude Kinsale will research the various charts and chart options available. In most cases we will use the UK Hydrographic office charts, better known as the British Admiralty charts, renowned the word over for their vast database, they are credited with charting vast areas of the globe.

Having identified the focal point we will then work with the customer to determine the size of the chart section. Latitude Kinsale will advise you on the layout and ensure that the end product gives maximum impact such that you and your friends will instantly recognise the location. The framed sizes start at 380mm X 480mm and can be as large as 1000mm X 800mm. As the size increases so too does the impact of the final product.

The process of making a 3D chart requires several charts to make one piece. Latitude Kinsale have developed the skill set to hand cut each and every piece. It takes many hour's and even days of painstaking work to make a 3D chart. Meticulous attention to detail and a lot of patience shows in the final product.

The 3D chart is mounted and framed in a unique way that enhances the 3D effect. We can provide a selection of frames to suit you individual needs. The artist, Bobby Nash, signs each piece.

Charts
Latitude Kinsale can use any chart from around the world, we have access to all of the Hydrographic offices including UKHO, NOAA  etc. The majority of our work uses UKHO / British Admiralty charts(Link to Todd) which are colour high quality charts, being the worlds largest Hyrographic office gives us access to the most comprehensive collection of nautical charts.

Black & White Archive charts.
Latitude Kinsale has access to the UKHO archive. We can research charts dating back to the 1800’s.  The B&W charts look fabulous in their own right but especially done in 3D and we wil even do the sea views in 3D. Framed in a  beautiful black frame with a charcoal surround and black background. With the addition of background lighting they are true works of nautical art.

Surround Lighting
Latitude Kinsale prides itself in being innovative, surround lighting built into the frame!! The effect is stunning! A soft  white light is cast evenly across the face of the chart highlighting the 3D, casting shadows and in a way that there is no reflection in the glass. In a room at night they glow and become a major feature. We developed a special frame with inbult LED lighting carefully concealed in the frame so all you see is the “light”! . LED lighting is the most reliable form of lighting. An external transformer plugs into the nearest mains supply and a light cable supplys 9V’s to the back of the unit . Chart Table
Creating Bespoke furniture in the form of chart tables. Latitude Kinsale combines its creative talent, embedding a 3D chart under glass putting your own personal stamp on a piece of fine furniture. Or on a boat! Latitude Kinsale will design a table that will integrate seamlessly into your boats interior. Imbedded background lighting and you add a serious Wow factor that will set your interior apart from the rest.  (Link to chart table page)

Story Board chart
Combining a series of 3D charts in one frame that tells a story. In the example shown on this page there are four individual 3D charts, it was a gift from the crew to the skipper after many great years racing. The four charts are :

   1. Isle of Wight   - The Home Port.
   2. The Fastnet - The Fastnet race
   3. Muckle Flugga – The round Britain & Ireland race
   4. Cork Harbour – Cork Week

Framing Options.
Every chart is framed and ready to hang.  Latitude Kinsale have taken care of every detail, we know from experience what is the most suitable frame and you the customer do not have to worry about framing. Our frames are high quality and are an intregal part of the 3D nautical chart.
We can offer a limited choice in the case of colour chart, the standard frame is Ramen which is very neutral, blending in with most surroundings. Alternatively we can offer a high quality Oak frame , carefully chosen for its depth and character of wood.
