Andros Island, largest island of The Bahamas. It lies 40 km west of New Providence Island. Andros is bordered on the east by the Tongue of the Ocean. The Andros Barrier Reef is the world’s sixth longest. It runs for 225 km, averaging a distance of 2–3 km from the Andros shore. The extensive flats of the Great Bahama Bank lie to the west, northwest and south of Andros. The island has the world’s largest collection of blue holes.
The Tongue of the Ocean is the name of a region of much deeper water in the Bahamas separating the islands of Andros and New Providence. It is a U-shaped, Its depth varies gradually from 1,100 meters in the south to 2,000 meters in the north.
