The location for this piece has it all. The picture postcard island of Capri, the charming town of Sorrento overlooking the Bay of Naples, and inland as far as the rugged mountain of Monte Faito. Who wouldn’t wish to visit this beautiful part of Italy’s Amalfi Coast?

There aren’t many of our commissions that include a dramatic volcanic mountain, but because of the proximity of Mt. Vesuvius on this chart, including it was an obvious choice. To highlight this, we included the feature of a land profile elevation on the bottom of the chart. It displays the view of the coastline and mountains (with Mt. Vesuvius in the distance) that a sailor would see as he makes his approach from the south.

The use of a black and white chart gives a particularly dramatic appearance to the mountain range towards the top-right corner of the picture. This, combined with Capri’s frontal elevation, gives a nice sense of balance to the finished work.
