The town is nestled between the Twelve Bens mountains and the Atlantic Ocean, at the mouth of Clifden Bay. Clifden was the terminus of a light railway from 1895 to 1935 and was once a small port. Roundstone is a small village and seaside resort.
An unusual feature is the inclusion of the land elevation in the top of the picture, which show how a sailor would see the entrance to the bay in their approach from the sea.
