Located in Brittany, north-western France, the journey from the maritime city of Lorient to the Île de Groix is a scenic 45-minute ferry ride across the Atlantic. Groix greets travelers with dramatic cliffs, pristine beaches, charming fishing villages, and car-free roads, offering a peaceful, rugged escape from the mainland.
Ile de Groix is Brittany’s second largest island after Belle Ile. High cliffs are on its north coast and sandy beaches in secluded coves on the south coast. Groix is also famous for having the only convex beach in Europe, known as the Plages des Grandes Sables, which also moves following sea currents. During the last 15 years, the beach moved half a kilometre westbound.
On the mainland, the towns of Port Louis and Larmor-Plage can be seen on either side of Le Blavet river near Lorient. Le Blavet flows from central Brittany before discharging into the Atlantic.
