New Caledonia lies in the Coral Sea halfway between Australia and Fiji. The archipelago consists of Grand Terre, which is the main island, and smaller islands including the Loyalty Islands, the Chesterfield Islands, the Belep archipelago and the Isle of Pines. The group is surrounded by the New Caledonian Barrier Reef which runs 1,500km in length. It is this reef that adds a layer of interest and complexity to this lovely chart. The Isle of Pines or to give it its French name; Ile des Pins is one of the main islands shown on this chart. It measures 15km by 13km. Between this island and New Caledonia lies Ile Ouen at Prony Bay.

This is a most attractive chart of a very interesting area. Note how the compass rose and the south barrier reef extend off the edge of the chart as an artistic feature. The chart chosen is a classic black and white from the Admiralty archives. It is set on a black background and has a charcoal mount and a black frame. The 3d features are enhanced by surround lighting built into the frame.
