Port Phillip is a horsehead-shaped enclosed bay on the central coast of southern Victoria, Australia.
The bay’s entrance, known as “the Rip” 2.8 km wide.
This chart focusses particularly on the narrow entrance to the bay between Point Lonsdale and Fort Nepean. To the north-east of Point Lonsdale is Swan Island. The continuous maintenance pumping of sand from the harbour’s entrance channel to keep it navigable has resulted in longshore drift of sand north-eastwards to connect Sand Island with Swan Island and create two lagoons.
