The Italian island of Sardinia is the second largest of the Mediterranean islands, Sicily being the largest. It is separated from Corsica to its north by The Bonifacio Strait. Sardinia lies 200 km west of the mainland of Italy, 12 km south of Corsica. Sardinia’s capital and largest city is Cagliari. The coasts of Sardinia are 1,849 km long. They are generally high and rocky, with long, relatively straight stretches of coastline, many outstanding headlands, a few wide, deep bays, rias, many inlets and with various smaller islands off the coast. Sardinia’s rivers, of which the Tirso and Flumendosa are the most important, are short and full of rapids.
The small islands of San Pietro and Sant’Antioco are also shown in the southwest of Sardinia.
