The island is Sicily occupies the entirety of this chart. To the east we get a small glimpse of the Italian mainland from which it is separated by the Strait of Messina which is a distance of only 3km at its narrowest point. Sicily and its surrounding small islands have some very active volcanoes. Mount Etna dominates the eastern coast and is the largest active volcano in Europe.
