Tanegashima island is a popular beach destination well known for its surf, sun, and sand, it is located about 20 kilometers northeast of Yakushima and 43 kilometers south of Kyushu is also the location of the Tanegashima Space Center, home to Japan’s space program. Tanegashima is the most populated island in the Osumi islands group.
Yakushima island is the largest and the next most-populated of the Osumi islands group. The craggy mountain peaks of the island’s interior are home to ancient cedar trees. It is an island of extremes, the mountains in the central forests are one of the wettest parts of Japan and can be covered in snow in the winter while the coast is still balmy.
