The Solent is the strait that separates the Isle of Wight from the mainland of England. It is about 20 miles in length and varies in width between one and four miles. The Solent is a major shipping route for passenger, freight and military vessels. It is an important recreational area for water sports, particularly yachting, hosting the Cowes Week sailing event annually. It is sheltered by the Isle of Wight and has a very complex tidal pattern.
Cowes on the Isle of Wight is included as is a section of the River Hamble as far as Southampton. On the right hand side of the chart Portsmouth and Gosport are shown. This is one of many 3d charts that we have been requested to create for this most iconic location for British sailing.
