The Whitsunday Islands is a group of 74 islands off the coast of Queensland, Australia. They lie on the Great Barrier Reef approx. 900kms north of Brisbane. Only 8 of the islands are inhabited, namely: Daydream, Hayman, Hook, South Molle, Whitsunday, Hamilton, Long and Lindeman.

The islands are very guaged which adds to the complexity of re-creating the chart in 3D. The numerous islands are closely bunched together, resulting in many narrow deep channels. Part of the mainland is also shown from Airlie Beach to the coast opposite Long Island. This gives a sense of perspective to the islands’ position relative to the mainland.

The finished chart was given a grey frame with a black mount and background. Surround lighting enhances the completed piece.
