This lovely chart features Western Australia’s dramatic south coast – King George Sound to Two Peoples Bay.
Starting far west in the open Southern Ocean, Eclipse Island sits offshore with steep granite cliffs. Moving eastward, the entrance to King George Sound is marked by Breaksea Island to the south and the high granite of Vancouver Peninsula to the north.
Inside the Sound, Michaelmas Island on the northern side. To the west lies the enclosed basin of Princess Royal Harbour, connected to the Sound by narrow channels.
Further east along the southern shoreline, small rocky outcrops appear in sequence: Stony Island, Seal Island, and Mistaken Island. Just south of these sits Flinders Island, another granite islet close to the mainland.
The coastline opens into Two Peoples Bay which you can find the top right of the chart.
Princess Royal Harbour lies at the western end of the Sound, almost completely enclosed by land. It is a deep, calm basin with narrow entrances, bordered by low hills and the city of Albany. The harbour’s sheltered nature made it historically important as a safe anchorage and whaling base.
