This chart features the beautiful coastline from Ballinskelligs to Dunmanus Bay.
Balllinskelligs Bay is a horseshoe shaped bay on the Wild Atlantic Way in Co. Kerry. The village of Derrynane is shown, just below centre on the chart. It is situated on the shores of Derrynane Bay near Caherdaniel. It is known for Derrynane House which was the ancestral home of Daniel O’Connell.
Off-shore can be seen several small islands including Deenish Island, Scariff Island and Abbey Island. They are all uninhabited islands in the Atlantic Ocean. Abbey Island can be reached on foot through a beach and is home to the 6th century ruins of Derrynane Abbey.
Dunmanus Bay lies between Mizen Head to the south and Sheep’s Head to the north with the small village of Durrus at the head of the bay. Sheep’s Head peninsula has two small villages of Ahakista and Kilcrohane on its southern shore with the northern shore being more isolated. It is one of the smallest peninsulas on the south west coast. It is quiet, unspoilt and is less frequented than other locations in this region. Despite this, it has beautiful scenery and is a hidden gem on the West Cork coastline. The Sheep’s Head Way is an 88km circular walking route around this scenic area.
