This lovely chart shows the coastline from Doonloughan to Kingstown in Co. Galway. Mannin Bay is centred of the chart and Clifden at the top right of the chart.
Connemara, region of County Galway, western Ireland. It lies west of Galway city and Loughs (Lakes) Corrib and Mask. Referred to as a “savage beauty” by Irish writer Oscar Wilde, Connemara comprises ice-scoured, rock-strewn country mostly covered with peat bog.
Mannin bay is located in the heart of Connemara, an area of Galway probably best known for its Gaeltacht (Irish speaking area).
North of the Clifden-Galway road are the sharp-peaked quartzite ranges of the Twelve Bens and Maumturks, with many summits more than 610 metres high. Clifden (Irish: An Clochán, meaning “stepping stones”) the only town in County Galway, in the region of Connemara, located on the Owenglin River where it flows into Clifden Bay.
An unusual feature is the inclusion of the land elevation, which show how a sailor would see the entrance to the harbour in their approach from the sea.
