The coastline is beautifully portrayed from Clew Bay in County Mayo to Mannin Bay in County Galway being the dominant feature.
The focal point is Renvyle (or Rinvyle) peninsula which is shown central of the chart along the coastline, with Inishbofin and Inishsjark lie the opposite side.
Renvyle is surrounded on three sides by the Atlantic Ocean and by the Dawros river on the other side. It contains the villages of Tully and Tully Cross. The villages of Leenane and Letterfrack are close by and Clifden is the nearest town, lying 9 km to the south. The peninsula is dominated by Letter Hill (also known as Tully Mountain) which is 356m high. The Twelve Bens Mountains are also visible.
Inisbofin, Inisturk and Clare Island form the outer reaches of this chart. On close inspection you can see the wonderful detail of this beautiful Co. Galway and Mayo coastline. There are many smaller islands shown but from west to east, Inishbofin is the first of the three islands shown. Its Irish translation is ‘Island of the White Cow’. It lies about 8 km from Cleggan Bay in Connemara. To the northeast, the next island is Inishturk. History tells us that this island has been inhabited since at least 1700 and it now has a small permanent population of less than 100 people.
Clare Island is the largest of the three main islands and lies guarding the entrance to Clew Bay in Co. Mayo. It was once home of the famous Irish pirate queen Grainne O’Malley. It is a mountainous island with the harbour located on the southeast side with moorings for visiting yachts.
