The Savannah River is a major river in the southeastern United States, forming most of the border between the states of South Carolina and Georgia. Two tributaries of the Savannah, the Tugaloo River and the Chattooga River, form the northernmost part of the border. It is navigable for shallow draft and barge traffic from its mouth to Augusta and for ocean vessels from the mouth to 8 km above Savannah.
The Whitemarsh Island is bordered to the north by Richardson Creek, to the east by Turner Creek, and to the south and west by the Wilmington River, all of which are tidal water bodies.
