This lovely chart features Urk island. We made a 3D chart with a very rare precious B&W chart from 1852. At one time the island of Urk was in the centre of the Zuider Zee and of great importance to mariners. Urk is now a charming fishing town in Flevoland, Netherlands. It has a rich maritime history, a picturesque harbor, and a strong cultural identity. Famous for its lighthouse, traditional fishing boats, and unique dialect, Urk remains deeply connected to its seafaring heritage.
The Zuiderzee or Zuider Zee was a shallow bay of the North Sea in the northwest of the Netherlands. In 19th century, a Dutch civil engineer came up with a plan that proposed building a long dam that would close off the Zuiderzee and turn it into a lake, IJsselmeer, shallow freshwater lake now.
