The Whitsunday Islands are an archipelago of 74 tropical islands located about 55 km off the Queensland coast, Australia, beside the Great Barrier Reef—a vast coral ecosystem rich in marine life. Most islands are uninhabited and characterised by dense rainforest, hiking trails, and white‑sand beaches. The mainland town of Airlie Beach serves as the region’s central hub.
Beginning in the western Whitsunday Passage near Airlie Beach, the first islands eastward are the Molle Group—South Molle Island, Long Island, and Pine Island—forming a chain of forested ridges and sheltered bays. Farther east, the channel opens to the main Whitsunday group, beginning with Cid Island and Cid Harbour, followed by Whitsunday Island, known for Whitehaven Beach.
East of Whitsunday Island lie Haslewood Island, Lupton Island, Teague Island, and Border Island, with smaller nearby islands including Ireby Island, Dumbell Island, and Deloraine Island. South of Whitsunday Island, notable islands include Hamilton, Dent, Henning, Pentecost, Little Lindeman, Lindeman, Seaforth, Maher, Shaw, Comston, Triangle, and Volscow.
