This lovely chart was commissioned for the old lighthouse in Urk island. We were asked to make a chart with a very rare precious B&W chart from 1852. At one time the island of Urk was in the centre of the Zuider Zee and of great importance to mariners.
This was a very interesting 3D chart, the NW coast of Holland is made up of a series of islands with a complex networks of channels that run between the various sand banks.
The Zuiderzee or Zuider Zee was a shallow bay of the North Sea in the northwest of the Netherlands. In 19th century, a Dutch civil engineer came up with a plan that proposed building a long dam that would close off the Zuiderzee and turn it into a lake, IJsselmeer, shallow freshwater lake now.
The surround lighting captures the numerous contours and a carbon fibre background makes the piece appear as though it is floating within the frame.
